Orbenin® EXTRA DC

Intramammary suspension

Orbenin® Extra DC intramammary suspension is a stable suspension containing 600 mg per syringe of specially processed cloxacillin as the benzathine salt in a long-acting base with 3 % aluminium monostearate.

C. 16.1. Intra-mammary preparations.

Orbenin® Extra DC is indicated for the intramammary treatment of the cow at drying off. It maintains effective antibiotic concentrations in the udder for up to seven weeks.

Orbenin® Extra DC must not be used for treatment of the lactating cow, since the substance would be present in the milk for 35 days.

Use only as directed.

One syringe per quarter immediately after the last milking of a lactation.

At the end of lactation, milk the cow out normally. Clean and disinfect the teat end, e.g. with a cotton wool swab soaked in methylated spirits. Infuse one pre-filled syringe of Orbenin^® Extra DC into each quarter and leave it, without milking out. It is normally unnecessary and undesirable to introduce any further treatment during the dry period. The cow will be milked as usual when she calves down. A suitable disinfectant teat dip should be applied after the infusion.

Since the period of activity of the formulation is prolonged, it is important that this preparation should not be used for cows with a dry period of less than 7 weeks. This will avoid contamination of the milk after the colostrum has been removed. In such cases, another suitable product may be used at drying off.

Milk for human consumption may only be taken 96 hours after calving (following a dry period of 35 days or more).

Meat from treated cows should not be used for human consumption for 28 days after treatment.

Orbenin® Extra DC is supplied in cartons of 24 x 7 ml syringes.
